Dmitry Muratov’s Nobel Prize medal sold for record $103.5 million

The Nobel Peace Prize auctioned off by Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov
to raise money for Ukrainian child refugees
sold for $103.5 million!

Muratov, who was awarded the gold medal in October 2021,
helped found the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta
and was the publication’s editor-in-chief
when it shut down in March amid the Kremlin’s clampdown on journalists and public dissent
in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

After winning the Nobel Peace Prize last October, Russian journalist Dmitri A. Muratov said he felt the credit should have gone to another Russian: imprisoned opposition leader Aleksei A. Navalny.

Muratov, the editor of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta,
later announced that he would donate his approximately $500,000 in prize money to support various charities

And now Mr. Muratov — whose newspaper suspended publication in late March because he said Russia’s increasingly draconian press laws made it impossible to truthfully cover the war in Ukraine — is giving away the 23-karat gold Nobel Prize himself.

On June 20, the medal will be sold in New York by Heritage Auctions. All proceeds go to UNICEF to help children who are refugees from Ukraine.

“If we look at the number of refugees, we are actually having World War III, not a local conflict,” he said. “This has been a mistake and we must put an end to it.”

The 75th Cannes Film Festival - The Palm Dog Awards - Cannes, France, May 27, 2022. The dog named Opium receives the Humanitarian Palm Dog award, named the “Dogmatarian” award, on-behalf the Ukrainian Jack Russell mine sniffer honored for his service during the Ukraine-Russia conflict

This year's dogmanitarian was Patron, a Jack Russell terrier in Kyiv who detects bombs with his nose.

Patron, who was also honoured with a medal by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy earlier this month, was unable to travel to Cannes for his Palm Dog collar. Luckily, lookalike Opium was on hand to accept the award in his place

'It's a war': Russia's Pussy Riot on European tour to help Ukraine

Pussy Riot, Russian feminist punk music and theater collective critical of Putin’s regime, is back on tour. This time the group raises their voice against the war in Ukraine, calling for peace and freedom.

PUSSY RIOT is a Russian feminist protest art collective based in Moscow. Founded in March 2011, the group staged unauthorised provocative guerrilla punk rock performances in unusual public places, which were made into music videos and posted on the Internet. The collective's lyrical themes included feminism, LGBT rights, and opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom the group considered a dictator. `

They gained global notoriety when five members of the group staged a Punk Prayer performance inside Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior in 2012. On August 17, 2012, three Pussy Riot members - Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich were convicted of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred", and each was sentenced to two years' imprisonment.

In 2021 - 2022 Maria Alyokhina spent more than one year in jail and under house arrest for just social media posts supporting Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, who was poisoned and then imprisoned by Putin’s regime.

Russia needs de-Nazification, says Pussy Riot leader after escape

"I have no idea what will be the end of this reflection but without that, the country doesn't have a right to exist – like Germany after the Second World War. It’s Russia where we should have a de-Nazification, not Ukraine,"

There should also be a tribunal against Russian President Vladimir Putin and army generals and leaders, she said.
"There is no perspective for Russia with Putin, that crazy man who could start a nuclear war by pressing a button," said Pussy Riot co-founder Maria Alyokhina. Putin should be arrested immediately and put on trial, the activist told

She added that Putin needs a permanent war, the regime doesn't want peace but wants people to be in constant "survival mode." Putin's state "built everything on that, and can't live without it."

A Moscow court on Tuesday threw out jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's appeal against a nine-year prison sentence that he and his allies condemn as politically motivated.

"This is a stupid war which your Putin started," Navalny, 45, told the court via video link from a corrective penal colony. "This war was built on lies."

"What do you want to achieve? Do you want short-term control, to fight with future generations, fight for the future of Russia?" Navalny asked the court. "You will all suffer historic defeat."

"One madman has got his claws into Ukraine and I do not know what he wants to do with it, this crazy thief," Navalny said of Putin.

‘Ashamed’ Top Russian Diplomat Leaves United Nations Over Putin’s ‘Warmongering’

The chief of the Russian mission to the United Nations in Geneva has resigned his post in shame with a damning hate letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling the Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine not only a crime against the people of Ukraine, but perhaps “the most serious crime against the people of Russia, with a bold letter Z crossing out all hopes and prospects for a prosperous free society in our country.”

Boris Bondarev had worked at Russia’s foreign ministry since 2002, first in Moscow and then in Geneva, during which he said “the level of lies and unprofessionalism in the work of the Foreign Ministry has been increasing all the time.”

He named checked Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who he said started as an intellectual held in high esteem, but who was now “a good illustration of the degradation of this system.” He blames Lavrov—not Putin—for many of Russia’s recent choices, condemning him for “threaten[ing] the world (that is, Russia too!) with nuclear weapons!”

He said Russia’s foreign ministry—which he has helped shape for two decades—is no longer a diplomatic mission. “It is all about warmongering, lies and hatred,” he wrote in his resignation letter. “It serves interests of few, the very few people thus contributing to further isolation and degradation of my country. Russia no longer has allies, and there is no one to blame but its reckless and ill-conceived policy.”

He said the war was conceived by people who are willing to sacrifice as many Russian and Ukrainian lives to achieve one thing: “to remain in power forever, live in pompous tasteless palaces, sail on yachts comparable in tonnage and cost to the entire Russian Navy, enjoying unlimited power and complete impunity.”

Bondarev is the first high-level foreign diplomat to bail over the war, and said that despite his 20 years in Russia’s service, he “simply cannot any longer share in this bloody, witless, and absolutely needless ignominy.”

Russian singer risks prison sentence by mocking 'our Caesar' Vladimir Putin

Popular Russian musician Yuri Shevchuk, 65, defied authorities after speaking out against the war in Ukraine in front of an audience of 10,000 people who applauded his message

A popular Russian singer has risked a possible prison sentencing by speaking out against Vladimir Putin over the war with Ukraine

Rock musician Yuri Shevchuk, 65, was playing a concert in Ufa to 10,000 fans when he mocked “our Caesar” and Putin's invasion - which won strong applause from the crowd.

Risking a prison sentence, under Russia ’s draconian laws, he asked the crowd: “People are now killed in Ukraine, what for?

“Why are our guys dying there? Friends, what are the goals, that the youth of Russia, [and] the elderly, women, children are dying for?

“Because of some Napoleonic plans of our Caesar?”

This was greeted by strong applause and then he said:
“The motherland, friends, is not the president's ass that should be constantly caressed and kissed.

“The Motherland is a poor grandmother selling potatoes [to survive] at a [railway] station…

The singer has previously denounced the war, branding it “a huge tragedy that deprives many of us of the future. I'm in shock.

“We worry, we don't sleep at night, we watch the news, we call friends, probably the same as all residents of Ukraine and Russia.

"When the oil runs dry, our president will die."
